What if our calendar were obsolete? Sol maps the Gregorian calendar onto a fixed calendar of thirteen twenty-eight-day months, and lets you judge whether the alternative holds up.
The project
Our calendar is a two-thousand-year pile of compromises. Months of unequal length, weekdays that slide every year, quarters you cannot compare. Sol asks a simple question: what if we arranged the same days differently?
Thirteen months of twenty-eight days make three hundred and sixty-four. Every month is exactly four weeks. The 24th falls on a Wednesday, this year and every year after. Nothing is added or removed — the days are simply arranged differently.
The idea isn't mine: Moses Cotsworth published it in 1902, the League of Nations reviewed it in 1923, and Kodak ran on it internally from 1928 to 1989. Sixty-one years. It eventually fell not because it worked badly, but because the rest of the world didn't follow.
Technically, everything is computed in the browser: orbital position, real lunar phase from the illuminated fraction, axial tilt. No server, no API. This is the kind of project I build for the pleasure of understanding a subject by making it.
